Ethics

Ethics

Ethics are embedded into the core values of the University of Arizona reflecting our commitment to student success; research and educational excellence; and service to the community and state.  Every member of the university community is encouraged to engage in thoughtful, principled and just behavior.

While the foundations of the university’s compliance plan are rooted in standards established in the Federal Sentencing Guidelines §8B2.1 Effective Compliance and Ethics Program individual ethical standards and decision-making is less straightforward, as they are rooted in more complex and contextual consideration.

Dr. Thomas Shanks, S.J., Ph.D provides five questions for individuals to ask themselves each day to provide ethical reflection.  These questions are:

  1. Did I practice any virtues (e.g., integrity, honesty, compassion) today?
  2. Did I do more good than harm today?
  3. Did I treat others with dignity and respect today?
  4. Was I fair and just today?
  5. Was my community better because I was in it? Was I better because I was in my community?

Employees, students and community members engage in ethical scholarship and contemplation every day at the University of Arizona. A few highlights:
